Bob Laventure: People experiencing care in Scotland Go for Gold again!

The Go for Gold Resource 2018.

Inspired by the 2012 London Olympics and the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, for the last 7 years, people experiencing care across Scotland have been inspired to take up a wide range of sporting Challenges. Each summer, countless care settings have inspired people to take part in activity festivals, sports days and Senior Games, all designed to celebrate individual achievement, team-work and participation.

As the Go for Gold programme extends each year, so have opportunities for increasing inclusion. Adapted activities for those with limited mobility, intergenerational opportunities involving local schools, families and friends and members of local communities have all contributed to increasing numbers taking part each year. The move towards inclusion has been supported by a wider range of activities on offer, drawing in those for who walking and dancing are more attractive activities.

For 2018, those taking part can make use of the new Go for Gold Challenge Resource, which includes details of this years’ choice of 5 challenges providing a “Countdown for Success”. Designed to provide ideas for action and supporting planning tools, the resource also provides certificates and links to potential supporting local community organisations.

Big 10 – a new challenge for Scotland

We know that in previous years over two thousand people have participated in the Go for Gold Challenge. In 2018 we want to up our game even further and record the total amount of activity participation during this year’s challenge. To do this we are asking everyone to record their activity participation in bouts of 10 minutes throughout the different events and to count up and submit their total scores so that we can provide a Scotland wide total for Go for Gold 2018. Everyone involved can contribute, families and friends, volunteers and visitors, to a Scotland- wide total to demonstrate just how active those experiencing care can be.

An integral part of Care About Physical Activity, we’re hoping that the Go for Gold 2018 Challenge will inspire everyone experiencing care to move from “From one special day to everyday being special”.
